J-Cut aka audio advance, audio starts before video. L-Cut aka video advance, video starts before audio. It can advance the story in itself by moving the viewer ahead. It also can give a smoother transition, or many other effects. Find the two examples in the article by Chrisopher to be nice examples. Waltz for One from INTELLECTUAL PROPAGANDA on Vimeo.

They're named for the way they look while cutting film or using editing software. When the audio comes before the video, like you describe, that's a J-cut.

You don 't set the fade on the audio.... you set the duration of the fade transition in the VIDEO. If you do a RMB on the scene object, you can to a Transistion override.... make sure it is set to Fade, and set the duration to 2000ms or 3000ms. The audio will fade accordingly (as long as the audio does not exist on the net scene.

What’s in a name. J-cuts and L-cuts are similar, but different. By definition, J-cuts are scene transitions where the audio of the next scene precedes the picture change. In an L-cut, the audio carries over from the previous scene into the following one, despite visual changes.

Use scene management script that lives in a "bootstrap" scene that will know about dependencies for your scene, will load them before the scene is loaded and activated. Change the code and/or objects in your scene so that it doesn't break if those assets are missing and basically wait until they are loaded before instantiating/initializing.
