An AUDIO taper pot increases the signal from your guitar to your amp in a logarithmic (exponential) fashion. Simply explained, “1”, “2”, or “3” on the volume knob will produce little, if any, signal but once you get past “3” or so, the volume will ramp up a LOT. Past “8” or so there will be very little volume increase.

Audio or log pots fall steeply from maximum, from 100% down to about 10% at halfway, the 10% to zero in the second half of the turn. Most people prefer them, at least for tone pots, because it spreads out the perceived effect of the tone change more evenly. Linear pots seem to have most of the tone change from about 0 to 2 then not much from 2 to 10.

LINEAR VS. AUDIO TAPER? We get asked about Linear and Audio Taper pots a lot. Despite choosing which resistance of Pot to go with, there are two types of Pot “Tapers.” Taper refers to how the sweep acts and sounds. Is it smooth and gradual? Or, quick and abrupt? LINEAR POTS: Linear pots are, well, linear.

Why does Fender insist on using RH Audio Taper pots on MIM Strats and Teles, then wire them backwards (anti-clockwise) for left handers? 1) The non-linear audio taper is now doubly wrong, control does nothing until the last 1-2 % of travel; volume is like a kill switch. 2) On Strats the dial numbers are meaningless (not so important on Teles).

Nope. There are different "audio" tapers, like 10% log, 30% log, and hybrid tapers. Fender did in fact use different tapers for their "audio" pots. Fender pots have a code in the part number that specifies which taper is used. Look here:

Audio Taper – The audio taper is notated by the letter “A.” The audio taper pots tend to produce a steeper increase, especially at the top end. For instance, when the dial is turned to 5, the value of resistance is going to be a lot less than half. The audio tapers can also be further divided into two types; modern and vintage.

Some manufactures like Fender use Audio taper pots for both volume and tone controls. Gibson on the other hand uses linear taper pots for both volume and tone. And still others use Linar taper pots for volume and Audio taper pots for tone. However, if a problem of exists where a volume or tone pot has no effect on the sound, try a changing the taper.
